The University of Kansas Hospital, in the City of Kansas City, Kansas is in the poorest county in Kansas and is the primary care facility for many of the region's lowest-income people.

The Hospital has grown in capacity and reputation, becoming multi-state and national destination for patients. With patients traveling many hours from home for care, there is a growing demand for longer-term accommodation for discharged patients who require follow-up care and are too far from home to commute.

Lane4 Group, a property developer, found a solution in Hilton’s Home2 Suites model, which offers extended-stay terms and more in-room amenities like an in-room kitchen. A portion of the original building, operating as an Applebee’s Restaurant, remained and was remodeled to fit within the redevelopment of the property. The Project provides affordable extended-stay rooms targeted at patients of the University of Kansas and their families. In 2015, the Hospital provided $61.9 million (4.09%) in uncompensated care and 51.7% of compensated care was provided to Medicare/ Medicaid patients.

The Project also pays living wages to hotel employees. Full-time employees of the Applebee’s restaurant receive medical, dental, vision insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, deferred compensation program, profit sharing flexible spending accounts, life insurance, domestic partner benefits and paid-time off.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
