Northside Community Hub*

Memphis, TN

Northside High School was opened in 1968 with much fanfare as one of the most technologically advanced schools of its time. The school closed in 2016 due to lack of enrollment, budget cuts and declining quality. The 271,000 square foot facility changed from a valuable community asset to a blighted hole in the center of the community.

The goal of the Northside Community Hub is to convert the campus back into a community asset, housing multiple complimentary community service providers in the unique spaces offered by the building. Goodwill Excel Center will provide adult education and professional licensing to 1,750 students. A literacy tutoring program run by Literacy Mid-South will provide literacy resources and tutoring to over 9,580 elementary students and adult learners. By partnering with LifeDoc for a health clinic, over 7,000 residents can access primary care annually. William Moore College of Technology, a private, not-for-profit vocational college, will move their HVAC, Electrical and plumbing certification programs to the Hub. The third floor will offer non-NMTC-funded 41 affordable multi-family rental apartments (studio, one- and two-bedroom units) to complement the available single-family detached housing in the community.

MBS Urban Initiatives CDE contributed $10 million in NMTC allocation to Northside Community Hub, along with allocation from Rose Urban Green Fund ($13,890,000), Hope CDE ($7,000,000), Pathway CDE ($9,500,000), and USBCDC CDE ($1,650,000); for a total of $42,722,150 in NMTC Loans. But for the New Markets Tax Credit investment, the project would not have received the additional philanthropic funding nor provide below-market rents to tenants.

In total over 5,000 people in the community are expected to receive some form of services from the Campus annually.  Additionally, the project is expected to create 320 construction jobs, 141 permanent full-time jobs and provide 100% living wages to those employed at Northside Community Hub.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
