Midtown Fresh Market is the 11th grocery store developed by the Shina Group in Michigan. Each Market is independently owned and operated and provides tailored products for the communities in which it is located. Fifty percent of each store’s inventory is a mix of products typically found in a grocery store, while the other fifty percent of inventory is stocked according to high demand – thus meeting the needs of the community in place.

The new Midtown Fresh Market development provides critical healthy food access to the low-income, predominantly immigrant community, while alleviating a blighted site and remediating a brownfield. About 14,000 square feet are dedicated to healthy foods. At the site, local community college culinary students can host live educational demos, both educating the community and also allowing students to further develop skills learned in the classroom. The accompaniment of commercial and retail spaces increases investment in a community in which residents must leave to purchase most commercial goods or services.

The owners are committed to providing job opportunities to local, low-income persons (LIPs). 96% of the project’s newly created permanent jobs are held by LIPs. The owners collaborate with the Northside Association for Community Development to host job fairs, source employees, and provide food safety courses and are actively involved in community events. Their efforts increase job accessibility for LIPs, residents of low-income communities, homeless individuals, and individuals with disabilities.
