Pittsburgh’s BioForge is transforming a former steel mill site in Hazelwood Green into a 175,000 SF biomanufacturing and research hub. Anchored by ElevateBio and the University of Pittsburgh BioForge, the facility advances cell and gene therapy commercialization while providing accessible space for early-stage companies, nonprofit research, and workforce training.
Supported by $9.25 million in New Markets Tax Credits from MBS and PNC, BioForge prioritizes local job creation, on-the-job training, and inclusive economic growth. The project is expected to generate 164 construction jobs and 170 permanent positions—half accessible to individuals without a bachelor’s degree—with living wages and advancement opportunities.
BioForge anchors a new life sciences ecosystem, strengthening Pittsburgh’s innovation corridor and creating pathways to high-quality employment for the surrounding community.
