Sustainable Community Development

McCormack Baron Salazar’s sustainable community and smart growth development strategy employs sustainable construction and renovation practices to offer residents, owners, and government agencies significant reductions in utility costs and resource utilization—as well as indirect improvements in public wellness, lifestyle, and community appeal.

Our work focuses on remediating environmental problems of the past, setting high environmental standards for the future that include renewable energy and conservation of natural resources, and using smart-growth models to develop mixed-income communities. Sustainable development is not something that can be added at the end of the project or thought about as a separate component of the development. It must be incorporated from the start and must be an integral part of the overall planning and design of the development. By incorporating “green” design features from the start of a project, a relatively small investment during development can result in significant long-term savings in the operations of the buildings.

The goal of green development in our mixed-income communities is to create beautiful and functional neighborhoods that are healthy and cost-effective places for people to live, while helping residents save money and conserve natural resources.

Across the U.S., we have assembled an extensive portfolio of green properties—historic, single-building, multi-building, and transit-oriented developments. We have three LEED Accredited Professionals on staff who work with the Development Team and with third party architects and contractors to guide the green process and research new ways of cost-effectively incorporating new Green concepts into developments wherever feasible.
