McCormack Baron Salazar, Inc., and its subsidiaries McCormack Baron Ragan Management Services, McCormack Baron Asset Management and Sunwheel Energy Partners along with the nonprofit, Urban Strategies, earned the Top Award of Merit and Circle of Excellence in the 2011 St. Louis Green Business Challenge sponsored by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association (RCGA) and the Missouri Botanical Garden.  The Award was conferred at a breakfast ceremony held on December 6, 2011.

The McCormack Baron Salazar team was recognized for its significantly increased improvement in sustainability at their corporate offices and as well as for sustainable actions within the St. Louis community.  McCormack Baron Salazar began the six-month Challenge with a baseline score of only 29 of 215 possible points, but finished with 135 points, achieving the greatest gain among the 69 regional companies competing.

The McCormack Baron Salazar team’s most notable accomplishments are:

  • Leading the corporate neighbors of its headquarters at the Laclede Gas Building (owned and managed by Hertz Investment Group) to become the first Class-A office tower in St. Louis with comprehensive waste management, recycling and composting;

  • Initiating a comprehensive employee transportation survey to identify commuting habits and recommend transit, carpooling and biking alternatives;

  • Becoming the first corporate member of the St. Louis Downtown Bike Commuter Station, established by Trailnet and the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis;

  • Reducing non-recyclable office waste by more than 30% and switching towards office supplies that are reusable, recyclable, or contain recycled content.

“We made significant reductions in our environmental impact during the six-month St. Louis Green Business Challenge, and we appreciate the recognition from the RCGA and Missouri Botanical Garden,” said McCormack Baron Salazar Vice President and Director of Sustainability William Carson, LEED AP, BD+C.  “Our company’s Green Team led our colleagues to make more sustainable business and personal choices, and we improved our office and downtown community while saving substantial material and financial resources.”
